Folk Dance Competition
Theme: Cultural diversity and international mindedness.
Cultural diversity is an integral part of International Baccalaureate (IB) schools. Given the diversity of our school, it’s important to recognize and acknowledge the different cultures and backgrounds of our students and families. Here at IB School, Baru Sahib, teachers foster cultural awareness and international mindedness in and outside their classrooms in a variety of ways. So Folk Dance Inter-House Competition was organized by Abhay House to acknowledge our varied cultures and diversity, and we hope to promote awareness, tolerance and acceptance in our students.Read More
Selected folk dances and number of participants’ house wise are as below:
- Ajay house: The Bihu dance is an indigenous folk dance from the Indian state of Assam related to the Bihu festival and an important part of Assamese culture performed in a group. The Bihu dancers are usually young men and women and the dancing style is characterized by brisk steps and rapid hand movement. Total 18 students have participated.
- Amul house: The Tinikling is considered by many to be the Philippines’ national dance. The dance’s movements imitate the movement of the tikling bird as it walks around through tall grass and between tree branches. People perform the dance using bamboo poles. The dance is composed of three basic steps which include singles, doubles and hops. It looks similar to playing jump rope, except that the dancers perform the steps around and between the bamboo poles, and the dance becomes faster until someone makes a mistake and the next set of dancers takes a turn. Total 16 students have participated.
- Atul house: Ganesh Chaturthi Ganesh Chaturthi is primarily celebrated at home and in public by local community groups in the central and western states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Goa and the southern states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and eastern states of West Bengal and Odisha. Total 22 students have participated.
- Abhay house: According to our theme, Abhay house has taken four directions in India to present folk dances. These dances are Rouf of Kashmir, Ghoomar of Rajasthan, Wancho of Arunachal Pradesh and Dollu Kunitha of Karnataka. Total 28 students have participated.
